Stepful trains entry-level healthcare workers. People with no prior medical background can complete its courses and move directly into a new career.
The two flagship programs are medical assistant and pharmacy technician. Both are fully online and run four months, after which students complete roughly 100 hours of hands-on clinical or pharmacy practice at one of Stepful's partner sites, then sit national certification exams.
The course catalog has since expanded to include medical office administration and surgical technician assistant programs.
The target student is an adult who already has some kind of job but wants something more stable with better pay. Accordingly, live sessions are scheduled for early mornings and evenings – 4 or 5:30 a.m., or 7 or 9 p.m. – so students can study alongside existing work commitments. Despite those hours, upcoming medical assistant cohorts starting in early December are already 89% full, and a January cohort sits at 72%.
Student motivation has proven high, and the system delivers results:
- 90% of enrolled students complete the course.
- Graduates score an average of 85% on certification exams, compared to a national average of 70%.
- Graduates enter the workforce four times faster than students who pursue the same credentials through community colleges.
Stepful charges around $2,500 per course. Students pay directly, or healthcare organizations send their own candidates and employees through for initial training or continuing education.
Stepful graduated from Y Combinator in 2021 and trained its first 50 students that same year. In 2024, it's on track to train 30,000 students.
That growth rate has supported a fundraising cadence of roughly every six months. The most recent round was $31.5 million; before that, $12 million in February, $11.8 million the previous September, $7.5 million that May. Total raised: $67.8 million.
Stepful's stated mission is to create economic opportunity for one million people in healthcare.
The key phrase is "economic opportunity." As Y Combinator noted in a post about the previous round, Stepful graduates immediately earn an average of 25% more than they did before the program.
And they get there fast, and cheaply. Equivalent certifications through traditional programs can take two years and cost up to $20,000. Stepful is four months and $2,500. The advantage is obvious.
Medical assistants are genuinely in demand. The US had roughly 800,000 of them in 2023, and demand is expected to grow by another 120,000 over the next decade.
There's nowhere obvious to find them. The supply shortage across entry-level healthcare roles is severe. By 2025, the projected shortfalls include 450,000 home health aides, 95,000 medical assistants, 59,000 medical lab scientists, 40,000 lab technicians, and more.
This mirrors the broader crisis in licensed nursing – which a recent report labeled a national emergency. But nursing requires more education, a longer commitment, and a different kind of motivation – not everyone wants that path.
A medical assistant role is something different. It's half administrative: answering phones, scheduling appointments, filing records, transporting lab samples, prepping exam rooms, explaining procedures to patients, dispensing medications. The purely clinical tasks – removing sutures, changing dressings, drawing blood – are minimal.
Put bluntly: becoming a medical assistant is a better deal than driving for a rideshare or delivering packages. It just isn't obvious to the people who are currently doing those jobs.
Years ago, a conversation with a founder of a sanitation and disinfection service made an impression. He described how he recruited staff: he'd ride in a taxi and explain to the driver that instead of circling the city all day, they could become a disinfection technician – working less and earning more. He then hired a small team to do the same outreach at scale.
He had a constant inbound pipeline because "work less, earn more without a massive reinvention of yourself" is always a compelling offer.
It turns out Stepful's co-founder built exactly this mental model. Before Stepful, he was CEO of Handy, a home cleaning platform. Convincing people to clean houses held limited appeal – the job doesn't really beat driving or delivery. So he concluded it was easier and more sustainable to convince drivers, delivery workers, and cleaners to become medical assistants instead, where pay is meaningfully higher.
The shared insight between the disinfection startup founder and Stepful's founder is the same: show people a credible, low-friction path from what they're doing now to something that pays better. That requires identifying two large populations – who these people are today, and what they can become – and making the transition between them look simple.
Replicating the Stepful model – channeling delivery drivers, rideshare operators, and restaurant workers into entry-level healthcare roles – is the most directly actionable path. Demand for those roles is large and structural, guaranteeing graduates employment at a step-up in pay. The cognitive lift isn't extreme, which matters. You can't realistically retrain most delivery workers as software engineers – even though that's also a high-demand field – because the skill gap is too large.
The more generative question is what other large-population-to-high-demand-role conversions make sense. The constraints are consistent: a big supply pool today, a clear demand shortage to fill, and a transition path that doesn't require heroic effort. When those three line up, training at scale becomes a very good business.
